What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a modern form of trauma healing. It starts with the idea that trauma is not trapped in the memory of a past experience; instead it lives on in the nervous system of the affected person, who then loses the normal ability to self-regulate stress. The uncomfortable pattern of getting stuck in high stress levels can be renegotiated in a safe environment if careful attention is given to the subtle sensations experienced in the body and mind as the feeling of danger begins. This allows the nervous system to turn off the alarms and try new responses.
Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, SE is not like earlier body-oriented psychodynamic techniques that rely on catharsis and the re-living of traumatic events. SE is a gentle technique that concentrates on present experience. Working in small steps, it opens room for new decisions and actions, allowing the nervous system to heal itself.
“Now I have less fear of fear.”
Abbott Chrisman offers individual SE sessions separate from the Speaking without Fear courses.
